Vata constitution is governed by the features of air and ether. Generally, a Vata person will be thin, long-limbed, and taller.  Vatas typically have a lower body weight, dry skin, brittle nails, thin hair, and small, slightly sunken eyes.  They tend to prefer warm or hot weather and may have trouble tolerating the cold. They have a hard time gaining weight and need more structure to their body. When in a state of imbalance Vatas can suffer from anxiety, nervousness, low body weight, an active mind, and constipation.

Vata is your primary doshic constitution, we suggest the following:

  1. Food: Warmer and moist foods to counterbalance Vata’s tendency toward cold and dryness.
  2. Exercise: Strength training to support muscle development and bone density since Vata constitutions tend to have smaller bones and muscles.
  3. Mental-Emotional Balancing: Vata constitutions benefit from grounding exercises like yoga and meditation to keep anxiety low.

Pitta constitution is governed by the fire and water elements. A Pitta person is generally of average height and build with strong bone and muscle structure. They have a sharp nose and eyes that are sometimes offset with a slight pinkish tint. Pittas are active, typically perfectionists, dynamic, and intelligent with leadership qualities and a smart personality.  They tend to prefer cooler weather and have trouble tolerating the heat. Pittas are prone to inflammation, anger, frustration, acid reflux, and diarrhea.

Kapha constitution is governed by the water and earth elements. Kapha have a thick build, thick, dark hair, big eyes with white around, and prominent, shiny, white teeth. The skin may also be thick, moist, and a little cool to the touch. They are generally cool, calm, laid back, and cheerful. Kaphas need more consistent movement for a healthy lifestyle and can suffer from lethargy, depression, heaviness in mind and body, and swelling.
